From UCSD Custodian to Classroom: Utica GEM Paul Hance’s Journey Comes Full Circle!

In every school building, there are stories unfolding behind the scenes. Stories of perseverance, heart, and homegrown inspiration. This fall, Paul Hance’s remarkable journey continues as he steps into the role of teacher at Thomas R. Proctor High School!

Paul began his career with the Utica City School District on January 6, 2020, working as a custodian. From General Herkimer to Albany Elementary, he brought dedication, pride, and a deep care for the school communities he served. But Paul had another goal in mind. While working full time, he returned to school to pursue his dream of becoming a teacher.

What inspired the career change? “I’ve always liked sharing knowledge,” Paul said. “Coaching kept me close to the field, but becoming a custodian and being in school daily, interacting with students and staff, made me see the value I could provide by becoming a teacher.”

Approved at the July 22 Board of Education meeting, Paul will begin his first teaching position this fall, teaching Biology at Proctor High School. His story is one of determination, hard work, and a commitment to growth not just for himself but for the community he proudly serves.

Paul says, "I’m inspired by trying to create the best future I can for my daughter, inside our home and beyond." Now, as a UCSD educator, he will be helping to shape brighter futures for students across Utica as well.

Congratulations, Mr. Hance! From the hallway to the front of the classroom, your next chapter is a testament to what's possible. It's a powerful source of inspiration for every student you teach. The Utica City School District is proud of your accomplishments, and we are lucky to have you!
