Letter to Utica City School District Community from Dr. Spence

September 19, 2024

Dear UCSD Community,

We are aware of the disturbing, non-specific threats that have been circulating on social media, which some of our students have received. We take these matters extremely seriously and are working closely with the Utica Police Department (UPD) to address the situation.

Here is additional information on the current situation:

  1. The UPD Criminal Investigation Division is further investigating the origin of these threats, which are believed to possibly originate from out of state.

  2. We have implemented enhanced security measures across all our UCSD schools, which includes:

    • Restricted access controls, including bag scanning and metal detectors at the middle schools and high school

    • Single point of entry at each school

    • Increased internal and external camera surveillance

    • Stricter control on all doors

    • Additional security personnel who have undergone specialized training

    • Uniformed officers stationed at entrances

  3. We are in constant communication with the Utica Police Department. Our Director of School Safety and Security Michael Siriano, who has an extensive background in law enforcement. is closely involved in our security efforts.

  4. We will maintain these additional supports throughout the week while UPD continues its investigation.

  5. Out of an abundance of caution, we have increased our support safeguards for dismissals.

We understand that this situation may cause anxiety among our students, families, and staff. Please be assured that our primary focus is on keeping our students calm and safe. We encourage open communication and ask that if you see or hear of any additional threats, please immediately contact the Utica Police Department or your school administration.
We will continue to provide updates as they become available. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our utmost priority, and we are doing everything in our power to ensure a secure learning environment.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Christopher Spence
Superintendent, Utica City School District
